Extravasation Injuries
Kim Sang-Wha

Rhie Jong-Won
Abstract
Extravasation is an infrequent, but potential complication that occurs under a wide variety of circumstances. Prevention remains the ideal treatment for these iatrogenic injuries. However, when extravasation injuries do occur, approximately one-third of extravasations will result in tissue necrosis and subsequent defects, some of which necessitate surgical procedure to cover the soft tissue defects. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is necessary to minimize the amount of soft tissue injury. In this article, we describe an overview of extravasation including the cause, risk factors and management strategies. Since initial management is similar among extravasates, it is paramount to be aware of treatments and principles.
